Monday-Tuesday, October 31, 2006 You not going to believe what happened yesterday! Comes to find out, this has happened four times since July of this year. A small Sting Ray, not to be confused with a Skate, (click for difference) stung a man in his hand. Yep, when the man went to pat the Ray on it's back, the tail came up and the barbed him fast as lightning. The barb went in three inches. Ouch! Ouch! Ouch! I guided the man and his family in my truck to the new "Urgent Care" center at Carolina Beach. The doctor took x-rays and gave the man antibiotic to help ease the pain.. Some charmer got their kicks and pulled an alarm box on the 4th floor of a high rise in Carolina Beach. Two other fire departments were also sent on alert. Sheephead, Black Drum, Spots and Virginia Mullets were cleaned at our fish cleaning table this evening. Kure Pier and the surf all the way to the test sight had lots of folks catching fish today. Winds were still coming out of the south. Around 4:30pm I went over to check on the Carolina Beach State Park. Several triple axle trailers hitched up to due-lie trucks were parked in the parking lot. A Flounder fisherman was working Snow's Cut and the dock wall inside the boat slips. He was able to catch live Mullet Minnows earlier there. Also many Moth Bats were flying just before sunset. Stay tuned! Gasoline news: $2.08- 2.26 for regular. Around 1:30 pm, Kure Pier and the beach in front of the Blue Marlin Apartments started yielding Spots. "Two at time on many cast", reports several fishermen. We are seeing catches of 50 and 80 Spots in less than 5 hours. Second crossover on the south end produce a few Flounders today. So Saturday was not a water haul after all! At 7:30 pm winds are almost clam, but unfortunately creeping from the south. 2:00 pm Disappointment is the word today. "Boo-who" were the words of one brave-soul. Wind has the ocean choppy with a stiff southwest breeze pushing up to 25 knots. Number 4 and 5 sinkers are washing back to shore. (Culprit: guess! , Line that is greater than 25 lbs test will catch the wind and water currents and pull your tackle back to shore. Try a maximum of 15-17 lb test. "Isn't a 17 lb fish big enough?) To make matter worst, our office air conditioner just came on. It's set to come on at 72 degrees. Last week, we were looking for frost. Reports are coming in from the north end, "Freeman Park". More than 75 vehicles are lined up at the fake point back to the ICW. One fellow did report, he saw several too large to keep Red Drums up there. Drum this size make a great Kodak moment. The creatures were released back into the water. Alive! Overall, there is nothing to brag about on this beautiful Saturday afternoon. OH! REMEMBER TO SET YOUR CLOCKS BACK TONIGHT. It was not until 2:00 this afternoon did we get any decent fishing reports. A good school of Spots came by and some of our guest were able to catch several dozen or so per person. Around 7:00 pm rain showers set in. This is upsetting to many who were looking for a repeat performance of last week. Several fishermen here last week came back for another weekend Bonanza. Flounder reports came in from the south end. Winds at sunset were coming from the southwest. The fishermen that have been catching all the Bluefish this week said "Things slowed down bit." So they picked up their picks and guitars, and started playing "John Cash's and Hank Williamson's song". Maybe that's why these guys caught so many Blues this week. " The midnight train is .... According to Uncle R. "Pompanos are delicious!" The fishermen staying with us this week had a repeat performance on catching Bluefish. Other than a clear sky providing a fantastic panoramic view, there are not that many folks down on this middle of the week day. At sunset, Snows Cut was slick as glass. No boats either. Bluefish are delicious if you go ahead and cut half the head off when you get him onshore. 80% or more of the fish's strong blood will exit. This will leave one a great tasting fish to cook. Tonight an inland frost is forecasted 30 miles inland. Karen and I got a deal on a load of Flounders. We cleaned, filleted, and/or steak up a 50 pound box under two hours. 10:00 am GOOOOOD Morning North Carolina and places beyond! Around 4 am this morning I woke up from a good dream. I was dreaming about my little doggie. We had to send her on her way back '92. Yep! She is alive and well in our heavenly hearts! There was sound in the house I had not heard since early spring. Large Flounder were the talk of the shop today. North end seemed to be where most of the action was coming from. Today, Bluefish were thick in front of the Blue Marlin Apartments . Tonight, Karen and I had two 17 inch Flounder. The water temperature drop while fishermen were fishing. On the international scene, Iceland has allowed it's Whaling industry to start Whaling again. A cooler load of Sheep Head fish filled one ladies cooler. Other fishermen came in below the norm yet still had a wonderful weekend. Bay fishermen were out today. When I went to recycle our Mullet Guts in Buzzard Bay, that is the body of water south of US 421 south of the Fort Fisher Ferry, boaters were rushing back in to avoid the falling rain shower. At the moment, 8 pm, there are not many folks stirring on the surf nor the Pier. My wife noticed the sea-birds were flying in formation. Many motels now are empty for some reason. Stay tuned! Teeter was the first man to come by this morning reporting a fish catch! Red Drum I believe is what he said. Spots by the cooler full was the other words today. Kure Beach Fishing Pier fishermen we coming in tonight for ICE to pack their coolers. Hundreds of fishermen are down hoping to pack their coolers for their freezers back home with fresh Spots, Virginia Mullets, Flounder and Black Drum. Several 20 inch Red Drum have been hauled in along the surf here in town. Kure Beach is having a "Fish Bonanza"! A boater from Gastonia called in reporting his group did real well last weekend. Ocean water temperature has dropped below 73 degrees. Flounder catches are coming in along Snows Cut. As you may tell, fish catches were off quite a bit over the past 5 days! Just kidding, I don't believe in that stuff. Kure Pier has produced some good catches off and on all week. Live Bloodworms this time of year are plump and healthy. Making the trip from Canada during the cooler fall weather makes the greatest difference. Our world redound "Salt Mullet" has landed several Speckled Trout. Stay tuned! Yesterday, heavy rains fell all over the region. Lake at Carolina Beach rose up to it's bank but did not over flow. perhaps because we have not had much rain since the tropical storm passed over prior to Labor Day. Stay tuned! Local fisherman believes that this year's fishing season will be delayed. "It's happened before!" One Kure Beach Motel has close up. Spots are running small for this time of year. Black Drum and a few Virginia Mullets reports are coming in. I have yet to hear of any Trout catches. The best reports I can give is the weather has been fantastic. Wednesday when I was dumping our mullet guts in the bay, I had a clear view all down the Cape Fear River into the back side of Long Beach. (9 miles ?) Stay tuned!
